Free Spirit Media is so humbled and grateful to be a part of the MacArthur Foundation Jack Fuller Initiative. Jack Fuller, former Editor and Publisher of The Chicago Tribune and MacArthur Trustee, was a firm believer that good journalism and civic engagement are inextricably linked. His enthusiasm for new ideas and institutions is made possible by both new technologies and the imagination of a generation of young people growing up in a digital world.

We benefit from a more informed society, a society that can hear different perspectives or look at different lived experiences and see value and humanity in that.
— Jeff McCarter, Founder and Executive Director of Free Spirit Media

This award is a vote of confidence for the vision and mission of Free Spirit Media to transform media and society through amplifying youth voices. We are so excited to be able to expand the work of The Real Chi, our experimental "learning newsroom" in North Lawndale for young adults interested in learning to produce high-quality, solutions-oriented, community journalism on the job.

Check out the MacArthur foundation video highlighting the other organizations who are also a part of the initiative, our #FSMfam friends, City Bureau and Chicago Public Media

You can help us continue this work with our donation matching challenge from now until the end of June!
