Laura had the privilege of teaching Digital Media and Documentary Production and learning alongside student media makers at NLCP-Christiana for two years before moving into the Program Manager role supporting In-School and Curriculum across the organization. She came to Free Spirit Media with a background in public access and public media and a passion for supporting media makers from underrepresented backgrounds share their stories. After college, Laura taught high school English through Teach For America on Chicago’s West Side in Little Village. She’s an avid writer, working on finishing her first feature film script, and she recently joined the Stage 18 film and media incubator at Cinespace.
Laura has her M.A. in Teaching from National Louis University and her M.F.A. in Film and Electronic Media from American University. During her M.F.A. program, she interned with WETA-TV (the Washington-area PBS affiliate) and worked as a graduate and research assistant in the Film and Media department. Immediately before working with FSM, she worked for the public access center in Brooklyn supporting its Media Education program and assisting community producers make shows for Brooklyn Free Speech TV. All these experiences confirmed her belief that media can powerfully impact learning and aid students' development into agents of social change. She brings this hope and passion to her work with Free Spirit Media.
