What does it look like to have a youth-led newsroom centered around solutions journalism? Free Spirit Media's Real Chi Youth (RCY) has been doing just that since 2013. RCY is comprised of college-aged journalists doing original community reporting from the West Side of Chicago. What kind of impact does RCY hope to have on the local media landscape? Find out at this week's #PublicNewsroom.
This week City Bureau be on the road at RCY's newsroom on the 11th floor of the Nichols Tower at Homan Square in North Lawndale. Attendees will get to check out the latest RCY stories including an editorial on the #NoCopAcademy campaign as well as stories about mental wellness in communities of color. Additionally RCY reporters will be facilitating a discussion on how best to report local news for a young audience.
This event is part of City Bureau's #PublicNewsroom programming, a series of free, weekly workshops and discussions aimed at building trust between journalists and the communities they serve while shaping a more inclusive newsroom.
