More Than Just a Cut

Principle Barbers opened its doors not to long ago. It offers men a full set of grooming options and much more.

DeMario Phipps-Smith walks into the barbershop for his appointment. He sits on the chair promptly after taking off his coat and backpack.

Phipps-Smith has an interview the following day so he’s not looking for a new, radical hairstyle; just a trim to leave a good impression.

During the cut, Phipps-Smith and Price discuss a variety of subjects that range from hair to future plans. During this visit a video of inspirational entrepreneur Byron Allen plays in the background, it dictates the conversation toward hidden business opportunities.

For Phipps-Smith getting a haircut is a refreshing experience: “You look good. You feel good,” he says.

Price’s new client is dressed more formal than his usual clientele, he sits on the chair with a serious demeanor. They eventually share a laugh after they realize they have a mutual friend.

Principle Barbers located on 3820 Ogden Ave, Chicago Ill., opened nearly two years ago and has been offering relaxed haircut experience in the North Lawndale neighborhood. Inside, owner and barber, Bobby Price, outfitted the the shop with couches, a flatscreen television and a ping pong table for clients to enjoy before sitting on the barber’s chair for their cut.

For many young men going to a barbershop is often a more appealing choice for a haircut than going to a salon. Barbershops like Principle Barbers are outfitted to be a relaxing environment that promotes intimate conversation between client and barber.
